5 keys to help you reduce complexity and costs for capital improvement projects

  • Street improvements, lights, and traffic signals

All of the above-mentioned subjects are of great importance to sustaining a smooth standard of living, and for the community as a whole. If any of these is not under proper attention, like water and sewer facilities and pipelines that do not work properly, chaos is likely to occur among people. So the main five keys to reducing the complexity and costs of capital improvement projects are as follows

1. Formation of a planning committee

The first and foremost step taken by the government should be, to form a group of members that specializes well in city development, the budgeting process, and the municipal corporation. With the right members in the team, the complexity of the capital improvement projects can be narrowed down and a proper way to analyze and fix an issue can be organized effectively. An engineer can be hired for the estimation of the costs or to design infrastructure with a minimum cost and a long-lasting structure. And the main planning head organizes the meetings and instructs other committee members about the projects.

2. Evaluation of the current financial situation

A project cannot function without proper finance for the daily activities of the capital improvement projects. To evaluate the current financial situation or to increase the finance for capital improvement, professional who is involved in the local community finances like accountants or treasurer’s can be hired to calculate the correct amount necessary to kick-start the projects. It should also be noted that only after evaluating the debt payments, expenditures, and future revenues, a proper plan should be fixed and implemented.

 3. Project prioritization

A capital improvement project includes various projects like fixing a broken bridge, improving the streets, undergrounding the utilities, fixing pipelines, water and sewer facilities, etc. The main challenge arises when a lot of the projects occur at once. Prioritizing the projects that need immediate attention should be the main concern of the committees. For example, dangerous pits inroads that lead to accidents and other complications should be attended to before switching on to another project. A proper plan and diagnosis should be made to prioritize the projects for an effective and smooth change in capital improvement.

 4. A proper timeline for the projects

Every project indeed takes its own time. Since there are plenty of projects to be taken care of, the time limit runs out. The committee members should plan a proper timeline for projects every year so that every issue can be solved accordingly. Sometimes, if there is a lack of knowledge about the time and when to attend to a particular project does not get the job done. A yearly plan and effective regulations on the time limit should be initiated for the completion of the projects.

5. Predefined criteria for the project completion

Numerous proposals for a particular project may be confusing to choose from. Therefore, pre-defined criteria should be advocated for the completion of a project. Criteria that improve the health of the people, the safety of the residents, and the community should be the priority instead of completing the projects that require the least attention.
